Driving in Morocco: Essential Tips for Tourists

Driving in Morocco is easier than many visitors expect, especially around Agadir, where roads are generally good and traffic is calmer than in the big cities. These practical tips will help you feel confident from day one.

Drive on the right

Morocco drives on the right-hand side of the road, like most of Europe and North America. Overtake on the left.

Your driving licence

Many international driving licences, including UK, US, Canadian and European licences, are accepted in Morocco. An International Driving Permit can also be useful for some travellers. Always carry your licence and passport while driving.

Respect speed limits and watch for cameras

Speed limits are signposted and enforced, and radar checks are common, especially on the approach to towns. Slow down as you enter built-up areas.

Police checkpoints are normal

You will often pass police or gendarmerie checkpoints at the entrance to towns. Slow down, be polite, and have your documents ready if asked. Most of the time you will simply be waved through.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts are common. Take them slowly, watch other drivers carefully and signal clearly when you exit.

Watch out for pedestrians, bikes and animals

In towns and villages, expect pedestrians, scooters and bicycles. On rural roads you may meet donkeys, sheep or goats — especially around bends.

Parking and parking attendants

In many areas, a parking attendant in a high-visibility vest will watch your car. It is customary to give them a few dirhams when you leave. Near hotels, the marina and the beachfront you will usually find parking easily.

Fuel

Petrol stations are easy to find on main roads and in towns. On mountain and rural routes, fill up before you set off. Keep some cash handy, as not every station accepts cards.

Motorway tolls

Morocco’s motorways (autoroutes) have toll booths. If you plan a longer trip — for example to Marrakech — keep some cash for the tolls.

Never drink and drive

Morocco has strict drink-driving rules. The only safe choice is not to drink at all if you are driving.
